UPDATED:

LAKE COUNTY — County Administrative Officer Kelly Cox is retiring March 16 after 30 years, but don”t expect to see any less of him. The Board of Supervisors (BOS) on Tuesday appointed him as the interim officer until a replacement is found.

“It”s my honor to do it,” Cox said.

Cox will stay on as a nonpaid volunteer to help the county. The BOS appointed him to his new interim role, effective March 17, during closed session. He said he will have the same current responsibilities.

“I”m hoping to come in (to work) a bit later,” he said, laughing. “I”ve wanted to do that for 30 years.”

Cox said the search for his permanent replacement is under way. Applications for the job were received and screened and an interview panel is being set up for the most qualified candidates, he said. Following that initial interview, those qualified will be interviewed by the BOS.

Cox said the BOS may then select someone or begin the recruitment process again. He said he will stay on until his replacement is ready.

“I”m ready to stay as long as necessary,” he said.
