LAKEPORT — In honor of the first Girl Scout meeting, held on March 12, 1912, a 100th-anniversary celebration takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Library Park in Lakeport. Hosted by local Girl Scout troops, the event includes a flag and rededication ceremony along with Girl Scout songs.

Girl Scouting started on March 12, 1912 with one woman, 18 girls and a dream when founder Juliette Gordon Low organized the first group of Girl Scouts in Savannah, Ga. A century later, there are 2.3 million Girl Scouts nationwide — including 47,000 in Northern California.

“As we step into our next century, we are proud that Girl Scouts is the nation”s premier leadership organization for girls, building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place,” Marina Park, CEO of Girl Scouts of Northern California, said. “Our innovative and relevant programs help girls develop the skills and qualities we want in our leaders of tomorrow while remaining true to our core values of service and leadership.”

Girl Scouts NorCal encompasses 19 Northern California counties — from Gilroy to the Oregon border and Chico to the east — thanks to support from donors, community supporters and 32,000 adult volunteers. For information about all of these celebrations, go to www.GirlScoutsNorCal.org/townsquare.
