AMERICAN CANYON — Rachel Sutton”s two-run double in the top of the fifth inning put the Middletown Mustangs ahead to stay in their 21-13 non-league softball victory over American Canyon on Wednesday afternoon.
In only its second year of existence, American Canyon High School currently has no senior class – only freshman, sophomore and junior classes. This is the first year the school is fielding varsity teams.
Middletown trailed 12-11 going to the top of the fifth when Sutton, who had a big day at the plate, doubled home the tying and go-ahead runs. The Mustangs (2-3) added two more insurance runs in the sixth before breaking the game open with a six-run seventh.
Sutton finished the day 5-for-6 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs.
Middletown erased an 8-5 deficit after three innings with a six-run fourth, but American Canyon went back in front 12-11 with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
“We kept fighting back and hitting the ball,” Middletown coach Bob Cummesky said of the 29 hits by the Mustangs.
Both teams also committed five errors that proved quite costly.
“We had four balls dropped in the outfield,” Cummesky said.
Besides Sutton, Alana McSween, Kristiana Outen and Madi Hicks had four hits apiece for the Mustangs. Hicks (4-for-6) had three doubles, two of which hit the fence, and also drove in five runs. McSween had four RBI.
Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Swank helped herself at the plate by going 3-for-6 with two RBI – the first multiple-hit game of her high school career. On the mound, she worked the first four innings, allowed 12 runs (three earned) on six hits with one strikeout and six walks.
