One of the many things I love about Lake County is the personal nature of the area and its personality. To be acknowledged at the market and often known by first name.
To have the feeling that I belong to something or somewhere. To ask the person behind the register how their vacation was. Things that would otherwise become nothing more than a transaction become a personal experience. Everything has a face on it. When a store goes out of business, we feel it.
We miss the owner.
When politicians tour the country looking for votes, they see red states and blue states and electoral votes. They sometimes miss the people. We are the people and in Lake County, we have the special opportunity of feeling what it”s like to be connected to one another in a sense of community that cannot be defined as simply as a city or town. That”s what made America and that”s where the promise of our future lies.
It”s in recognizing the significance of every individual and how when something happens to one person, we are all in a way, be it small or large, somewhat affected.
I read in the Record-Bee of the resignation of its publisher Gary Dickson.
For those who came to know Gary as more than a newspaper executive, they will feel the loss, they will miss his column and no doubt, his absence will be noticed.
So I want to pay tribute to Gary and wish him well and thank him for his contribution to the Lake County Record-Bee during his tenure here and hope that he reads this so he knows we will remember him.
It”s wonderful to live in a place where when a stone hits the water, the ripple is felt. That”s something you don”t find very often anymore. It reminds us all that each of us matters and that what we may do in our ordinary lives can make a difference.
