STEVINSON — Kelseyville High”s Corey Huber fired the ninth lowest round on Monday during the annual Hilmar Tournament at Stevinson Ranch Golf Club in Stevinson.

A past host of U.S. Open qualifying, Stevinson Ranch is a par-72 course with a 74.7 rating, which makes it an extremely tough test.

“It”s spring training for us, our version of Arizona,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “We get to come down here and play in 75-degree weather. It”s a tough course that helps us work the kinks out and get us ready for league.”

Kelseyville finished 14th in the 22-team standings with a score of 384 (combined low four individual rounds out of five). Ripon won the team title with 333 followed by Kimball (341) and host Hilmar (344).

Low round of the day was a tie between Kyle Intorf of Modesto Christian and Zach Capel of Ripon, both with 76. No playoff was held. Tanner Choate of Galt and Anthony Bonales of Central Valley were one shot back at 77.

Huber carded an 82 to lead Kelseyville. Wyatt Ferrell finished with 88, Joe Tannous had 97, and Max Whitaker 117.

“He”s a real steady kid,” Berry said of Huber, who is driving for more distance these days.

“He”s always had the real good short game,” Berry said. “But he”s driving the ball real well now … 260, 270 off the tee.”

Huber”s offseason work is also paying dividends.

“He”s the one who has worked the hardest at it the last couple of years,” Berry said.

Kelseyville opens its Coastal Mountain Conference South season on Thursday at Mount St. Helena Golf Course in Calistoga at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
