LAKEPORT — The Lakeport Women”s Civic Club (LWCC) is celebrating its 91st anniversary.
Since March 9, 1921 when LWCC was founded, club members have worked to identify and fulfill community needs. In its early years, LWCC held bake sales, canned vegetables and held socials, raising funds to plant the first shrubs in Library Park, install the first wooden street signs along Main Street and the first barbecue pit in Library Park, serve the first school lunches in the county and purchase books for the library. During World War II, the ladies grew “victory gardens,” knitted socks and rolled bandages for the soldiers.
In 2006, $10,000 was donated to the Westside Community Park project. The Victim Witness Program of Lake County was given $10,000 in 2007 to buy its silent heating and cooling unit for the new interview center. These donations were made possible by the accrued interest on the Certificate of Deposit from the sale of the LWCC clubhouse. It is the second $10,000 donation in LWCC history from this fund.
Fast forward to 2012 where LWCC continues to support the community at large with donations to Redwood Children”s Services, which will help children participate in sporting events or other extra curricular activities.
In December, the civic club bought toys for the Lakeport Fire Protection District to disperse to underprivileged children. At the Jan. 6, meeting civic clubb members learned a young man, Kevin Hart, was burned over 80 percent of his body in a house fire and LWCC donated to his family as he will be in the hospital at least eight months.
LWCC has also donated to the United Veterans Council Military Funeral Honors Team and to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2015. The club will award two scholarships of $1,000 each for two students pursuing vocational education this June, as well as donating to Northlake Adult Day Care in Lucerne.
LWCC meets on the first Friday of each month, September through June, to conduct a brief business meeting, enjoy a luncheon and an educational, inspirational program. Dues cost $20 annually.
