SOUTH LAKE COUNTY — Low-cost chipping is available again this year to supporting members of the South Lake Fire Safe Council.

A supporting membership costs $25 for the year and helps to support the programs of the South Lake Fire Safe Council. The council also applies for grants to cover the costs.

The South Lake Fire Safe Council will provide up to half an hour of chipping for a resident”s $25 supporting membership.

Additional low-cost chipping is available to supporting members at a cost of $25 for each additional half hour for up to two hours.

Chipping will be done in March, May, July, September and November. Applications are due by Wednesday for chipping in March, May 23 for chipping in May, July 25 for chipping in July, Sept. 19 for chipping in September and Nov. 21 for chipping in November.

This is the last round of chipping that will be subsidized by current grants.

The ability to get grants to provide the low-cost chipping program and fire breaks depends on input from the community.

Most grants require a certain percentage of contribution from the community in order to be eligible.

A $25 tax-deductible annual supporting membership in the South Lake Fire Safe Council helps meet this requirement.

Applications for 2012 supporting memberships can be picked up at the Fire Station in Middletown or downloaded from the website, www.southlakefiresafecouncil.org.

Applications for chipping can also be picked up at the fire station or website.
