CLEARLAKE OAKS — Lake County Sheriff”s Office (LCSO) deputies arrested a man Saturday for allegedly stabbing a dog.

According to LCSO Sgt. Steve Brooks, deputies were dispatched to a house on Hoover Street in Clearlake Oaks on a report that a dog was stabbed. Upon their arrival, they noticed the dog had a 10-inch-long laceration across its back, Brooks said.

The owner of the dog said he let his dog go outside of the residence into the front yard, according to Brooks. The dog owner noticed a male subject, later identified as Brian Hagan, 73, of Clearlake Oaks, who was walking a small dog on a leash toward the residence. Brooks said Hagan appeared to be carrying a long stick.

The owner said his dog walked toward the street as Hagan got closer, according to Brooks. The dog barked at Hagan and the owner called the dog to return, which it did, Brooks said.

Hagan continued walking toward the residence and raised the stick toward the dog, which made the dog bark more, Brooks said. Hagan continued to walk toward the dog and allegedly came within five feet of it.

Brooks said the dog owner noticed Hagan was actually holding a metal pole with a knife attached to the end of it. Hagan allegedly swung the pole at the dog, which cut the dog across the back.

Brooks said the owner confronted Hagan about cutting his dog and noticed the knife had fallen from the end of the pole. Hagan allegedly retrieved the knife, attached it to the pole and raised it. Hagan told the dog owner that he would do the same to him, according to Brooks.

The dog was transported to a veterinary hospital where it received treatment. Hagan was arrested on charges of unlawful possession/manufacture of a dangerous weapon, cruelty to animals, criminal threats and brandishing a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility.
