California Women for Agriculture

LAKE COUNTY — The Lake County Chapter of California Women for Agriculture (CWA) is offering scholarships up to $1,000 to graduating high school seniors and college or vocational students whose educational emphasis is related to agriculture and agri-business and who will be attending as a full-time student. Last year CWA awarded three scholarships in the amount of $800 each.

Students must be residents of Lake County and have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or greater. The application must include a statement of educational and career goals, a personal history statement, a letter of recommendation and a copy of a current transcript.

The applicant must be willing to participate in an interview with the CWA scholarship committee if requested and agree to attend a CWA Chapter meeting if selected as a scholarship recipient.

Scholarship recipients will receive funds in two installments: one at the beginning of the first semester conditioned on proof of full-time enrollment, and the second at the beginning of the second semester conditioned on proof of full-time enrollment and a GPA of 3.0 or better for the first semester.

Scholarship applications and accompanying materials must be received by CWA on or before April 1 to be considered for an award. The application and criteria may be obtained by calling Sausha Racine at 245-4787.

Lake County Farm Bureau

LAKE COUNTY — Lake County Farm Bureau (LCFB) is offering scholarships to students with a desire to pursue a career in the agricultural industry. The scholarships are awarded annually.

The Lake County Farm Bureau Board of Directors determines the award amounts depending on the qualifications of the applicants and the funds available.

In the past, LCFB has given up to $1,000 for up to three recipients. The scholarships are awarded based upon academic achievement, career goals, extracurricular activities, determination, leadership skills and a commitment to study agriculture.

The scholarship is for any student entering or attending an accredited junior college, four-year college or university and pursuing a career in the agricultural industry. Students entering or attending a vocational school are eligible.

Students must be current residents of Lake County and plan to enroll in college or vocational school during the 2012-13 academic year. The application must include all current and official high school transcripts, all college or vocational school transcripts and three current and dated letters of recommendation.

Applications are available through high school counselors, the LCFB website at www.lakecofb.com or from the office at 65 Soda Bay Road in Lakeport. All applications must be postmarked by April 30. For more information, call 263-0911.

School of Shiatsu and Massage

MIDDLETOWN — The School of Shiatsu and Massage, located at Harbin Hot Springs in Middletown, announces its annual scholarship for 2012.

Each year the School of Shiatsu and Massage awards one Lake County resident a scholarship for 100 hours of massage training valued at more than $1,500. The recipient can stay at Harbin for 10 days of intensive training. A Harbin pass, camping and the text book are included.

This massage training will provide students the confidence, skills and techniques to become a massage practitioner. Emphasis is placed on stretching and proper body posture for the therapist to prevent injury while caring for the client.

Students will learn a Swedish relaxation massage and therapeutic approaches to common conditions. Body mechanics, the benefits and contraindications of massage, anatomy, proper draping, ethics and procedures for establishing a private practice will also be taught.

Applicants must be 18 years of age and Lake County residents. The deadline for applications is May 31. Finalists will be notified by June 15 and the winner will be announced June 30. Lake County Historical Society

LAKE COUNTY — The Lake County Historical Society will award its annual $500 scholarship to a Lake County high school graduating senior bound for college or trade school.

The applicant must carry at least 12 units and have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average. A 250- to 750-word essay relating to Lake County history is required. Extracurricular activities will also be evaluated. Applications must be received by April 20.

Application packets have been sent to Lake County high schools. Students may also obtain an application by calling LCHS Scholarship Chairman Tony Marchese at 274-1558.

COSMOS

LAKE COUNTY — Students are encouraged to apply to the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS), a four-week summer residential program for talented and motivated students who are completing grades eight through 11.

Applicants must have at least a 3.5 GPA and will need the recommendation of a math and science teacher. Applications are due prior to March 1. For more information, visit the COSMOS website at ucop.edu/cosmos or contact Tammy Serpa at tserpa@lakecoe.org or 262-4164.

Lakeport Women”s Civic Club

LAKE COUNTY — The Lakeport Women”s Civic Club will give two vocational scholarships of $1,000 each to qualifying students. Applications can be obtained from Mendocino and Yuba colleges and from Lake County high school counselors.

The deadline for all applications is April 19. Each applicant must be a Lake County resident, currently enrolled as a full-time student carrying 12 or more units; have a 2.75 GPA in all course work attempted; list all work and community involvement; state reasons for applying for this scholarship and why this particular field; and submit two letters of recommendation, one preferably from an employer. Trowel and Trellis Garden Club

LAKEPORT — The Clear Lake Trowel and Trellis Garden Club is offering its Elizabeth Whitehead Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 this spring. Applicants must be seniors in high school or students who have graduated from a Lake County high school and are continuing their education.

Students must major in and plan to enter the workforce in botany, conservation, entomology, floriculture, forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture/design, biology or plant genetics, urban planning, agriculture, environmental science or related fields.

Students must have a 2.75 GPA or better to apply. Students may attend or plan to attend an academic or vocational school as a full-time student in the 2012-2013 school year.

Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation, a recent photograph that is suitable for duplication and a transcript.

Applications are available from counselors or scholarship coordinators at Clear Lake, Kelseyville, Upper Lake, Middletown and Lower Lake high schools as well as at Mendocino and Yuba colleges.
