YUBA CITY — Five errors that led to eight unearned runs cost the Middletown Mustangs in a 10-0 non-league softball loss to River Valley High School on Wednesday in Yuba City.
“For a 10-0 game, we played four really good innings and two bad ones,” Middletown coach Bob Cummesky said. “We made some unbelievable plays (on defense), but we”re not making routine plays with two outs that are costing us.”
River Valley broke the game open with a five-run bottom of the second to open up a 6-0 lead. Two errors by the Mustangs (3-4) extended the inning. It was a 7-0 game entering the bottom of the sixth when River Valley tacked on its final three runs, at which point the game was called because of the 10-run rule.
“The biggest difference between us and them is we”re seeing pitching we”re not going to see down here,” Cummesky said.
Winning pitcher Ashlee Paterno worked the first four innings for the victory, allowing all three Middletown hits while striking out four and walking one.
Maria Castaldo, Rachel Sutton and Jessica Eixenberger had Middletown”s hits.
Kaitlyn Swank took the loss, working four innings and allowing six runs, only one of which was earned, striking out one and walking five.
Middletown returns to action Tuesday in San-ta Rosa against Maria Carrillo. The Mustangs open their league schedule Tuesday at home against Lower Lake at 4 p.m.
