LAKE COUNTY — April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and local law enforcement are focused on taking enforcement action on inattentive drivers.

The CHP is taking the opportunity to remind the motoring public, “When you”re behind the wheel and out on the roadways, it”s illegal to talk on your hand-held cell phone or text while driving. It”s not worth it.”

Distracted driving is the number one killer for teens in America. Make sure new and young drivers pay attention to the road. It”s illegal to use a cellphone, to talk or text, while driving.

Motorists who like to listen to good music while they drive, are advised to pre-select the music before you get out on the road. Don”t be distracted by musical preferences while driving. Always keep eyes on the road and be conscious of other motorists.

Multi-tasking can be a good thing, but not while driving. Motorists have one responsibility when they”re behind the wheel: driving safely. The lives of them and those around them depend on it.

A motorist who needs directions is advised to program the GPS before he or she gets out on the road. Don”t be distracted by activities that interfere with the ability to drive.

It”s important for motorists to remember that when they have children in their vehicle, they are responsible for the children”s safety out on the road. This means when the motorist is distracted, the children”s lives are at risk.

The CHP advises motorists, not to grab a hamburger or taco and get behind the wheel. Motorists should wait until they get to the destination to dig in.

Distracted driving can be many different things and eating and drinking behind the wheel can be deadly. The CHP advises motorists to always pay attention to the road.

Motorists may think that putting on makeup while driving is an easy task, but if they do, their eyes are not on the road and hands are not on the wheel.

Motorists should freshen up after they get to the destination, not when they are out on the roadway. Looking good isn”t worth it if a motorist is in a crash, or worse yet, injures or kills someone.

Motorists should adjust mirrors, radio, A-C and fasten the seat belt before they get out on the road. Don”t be distracted by these things that should be done before turning on the ignition.

If a motorist hears his or her cellphone ringing while driving, he or she should ignore it. If a motorist must answer the cellphone, he or she should pull over to the side of the road, stop the car in a safe location and then answer it.

April is “Distracted Driving Awareness” Month. Motorists are advised to remember that when driving, it is illegal to talk on a cell phone unless it is hands-free.

Forget the distractions and pay attention to driving when behind the wheel.
