MIDDLETOWN — Gerry Espinoza battled to a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Kenny Henninger in third singles on Wednesday as the Middletown Mustangs blanked the Clear Lake Cardinals 5-0 in Coastal Mountain Conference tennis action at Middletown.
The day”s other four matches went the minimum two sets. Cody Astley beat Raul Rendon 6-0, 6-0 in first singles, Jeremy Turner knocked off Tamara Rojas 6-1, 6-3 in third singles, Nika Gibbs and Oscar Rincon beat Brian Gatton and Nathan Harper 6-2, 6-1 in first doubles, and Madi Kucer and Chris King defeated Serena Kacharos and Bundida Kosolcharoen 6-0, 6-1 in second doubles.
Espinoza avenged a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Henninger last week in Lakeport during a 4-1 Middletown victory.
“Gerry put the ball in play a little bit more and moved Kenny around the court more this time,” Middletown coach Marc Morita said. “Gerry”s got some incredible strokes, but sometimes he goes for broke. We tried to rein him in a little bit more today. I”m proud of Gerry, he really needed that win and he”s only going to get better from here.”
Middletown also won an exhibition doubles match as Arianna Diaz and Gerardo Gonzalez beat Mike Reynolds and Nick Dudley 6-2.
Clear Lake travels to St. Helena today and Middletown hits the road Friday to play Cloverdale. Both matches start at 3:30 p.m.
