LAKE COUNTY — On March 22, Clearlake Mayor Joey Luiz presented a proclamation declaring March 30 and 31 to be “Stop Hunger Days” in Clearlake. In it, the Clearlake City Council urged, “all citizens to help to eliminate global hunger and support our local food pantries.”

Luiz joined with other volunteers to unload a truck full of donations from Foods Etc. “I think this event is important. It draws much-needed attention to the problem of hunger both locally and worldwide,” Luiz said.

“This work is essential to help families and individuals experiencing hard times and to bring unity to our citizens as we all work towards a positive goal. May all those involved in this effort be blessed and may the spirit of Lake County CAN! continue into the future as we work to end hunger,” he continued.

When asked why Foods Etc. was pitching in to support Lake County CAN!, President DennisDarling said, “We believe it is important to do our part to support our community, especially those who are hurting.”

Darling continued, “This is exactly the kind of response we”d hoped for when the pastors of Lake County”s seven United Methodist congregations started planning Lake County CAN! last August. From the beginning, our goal has been to engage the community beyond the walls of our churches in a focused effort to ease the plight of those suffering from hunger and malnutrition both locally and globally.”

Lake County CAN! events will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Upper Lake and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church near Pearl and Mullen in Clearlake.

The public is invited to stop by to help or just drop off a box or bag of non-perishable food items at the event. For information go to www.lakecountycan.org.
