MIDDLETOWN — Maria Castaldo pitched a complete game and had two hits at the plate for Middletown in an error-filled 11-4 non-league softball loss to St. Vincent High School of Petaluma on Thursday in Middletown.
“If we don”t learn how to catch and throw … or decide to catch and throw, every game is going to be like this,” Middletown coach Bob Cummesky said of the 11 errors committed by his squad.
Taking advantage of four Middletown errors in the top of the first inning, St. Vincent scored four times and never looked back. It was still a game after four innings with the visitors up 5-3, but a five-run St. Vincent fifth inning put the game out of reach.
Castaldo did her part on the mound, according to Cummesky.
“She kept the ball down and when we made plays behind her we were in the game,” Cummesky said.
Castaldo struck out four, walked five and allowed only two earned runs while scattering seven hits. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
Alana McSween also singled, doubled and scored twice as Middletown slipped to 3-7 on the season.
