ST. HELENA — The Middletown Mustangs lost 6-0 on Friday afternoon in St. Helena to the hometown Saints, who were led by junior Jonathon Wignall”s complete game shutout.
Wignall limited the Mustangs to a pair of singles and one walk while striking out six. He controlled opposing hitters by getting ahead in the count and keeping the ball low in the zone, Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said.
Wignall forced 11 groundball outs to the right side.
Junior Logan Smith took the loss for the Mustangs, giving up six runs (five earned) and eight hits.
Tucker said Smith showed significant strides despite the tough result. “He pitched a lot better than he has,” the coach said.
Junior Blaine Amos also pitched for the Mustangs, recording one out.
The first inning proved key.
Middletown senior Jack Hamilton got thrown out at the plate while trying to score from second base on Amos” two-out single to centerfield.
The Saints scored two runs in their half of the first — both coming on a single by Jimmy Figueroa. The junior added a two-run double in the third.
With the win, St. Helena improved to 3-0 in North Central League I play. The loss dropped Middletown to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in league.
