LAKE COUNTY — California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones reminded state residents this week that most auto insurance policies with comprehensive coverage will cover damage because of flooding, mudslides and falling trees.

“We can”t forget that last December the Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley areas were hit hard by an extreme storm with record-high winds, creating quite a bit of water and mud damage,” Jones said in a statement.

“In the wake of these current storms, I encourage consumers to check their auto insurance policies to make sure they have the coverage they need and whether full physical damage coverage is something they should consider,” he added.

Law does not mandate full physical damage coverage, but many consumers choose to purchase it. It covers damage to a car caused by reasons other than collision, such as fire, theft, windstorm, flood and vandalism.

Consumers with insurance questions should contact the California Department of Insurance help-line at 800-927-HELP.
