NAPA — The Clear Lake Cardinals kept it close until the bottom of the sixth, falling 9-3 to Justin-Siena in a non-league varsity baseball game at Napa.
Clear Lake (4-4) scored single runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings, the final run cutting Justin-Siena”s lead to 4-3. The Braves (11-3) responded with a five-run bottom of the sixth to break things open.
“Having played just one game the last two weeks because of rain, we came out a little rusty, committing three errors, and made too many mental mistakes,” Clear Lake assistant coach Gary Milhaupt said. “I was happy to have played this game to use as a tuneup for league … we play three league games this week.”
Clear Lake hosts Middletown today, Cloverdale Wednesday and Fort Bragg Friday in league action.
After the Cardinals staked starting pitcher Andrew Jackson to a l-0 lead in the top of the first, the Braves (11-3) came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to push in front to stay. Both teams scored a run in the fourth.
Jackson went 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI for Clear Lake and Stone Phillips went 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI.
