HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE — Gunning for their first Coastal Mountain Conference golf title since 1998, the Middletown Mustangs took a step in that direction Wednesday by winning a South match on their home course at Hidden Valley Lake.

Middletown finished with 329 strokes to St. Vincent”s 336. St. Helena came in third at 351, Kelseyville was next at 367, and Rincon Valley Christian was incomplete.

While St. Vincent still leads in the CMC South standings at 11-1, Middletown is right behind at 10-2 with three matches remaining.

“They are playing really well,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said of the Mustangs. “Middletown is playing with a quiet confidence and I wouldn”t be surprised if Middletown is able to run them (St. Vincent) down.”

Hidden Valley Lake pro Wayne Clark has been working with the Mustangs, who practiced all last week despite the rainy and stormy conditions in the county, according to Berry.

Chasen Tom led Middletown on Wednes-day with an 8-over-par round of 80. Daniel Eagle was next at 81, Anthony Tacla had 83, and Raphael Roy-Labelle carded an 85.

The day”s low round belonged to St. Vincent”s Evan Knight, whose round of 75 included six birdies. Kelseyville”s Wyatt Ferrell finished at 78, including three birdies, and Tom, St. Helena”s Nick Cazet and Rincon Valley Christian”s Kasey Cazet all had 80.

The next CMC South match is Monday at Oakmont East in Santa Rosa.
