KELSEYVILLE — If you think the Kelseyville High School tennis team is Moses Kuzu and everybody else, think again.
“It”s definitely a team effort,” Kelseyville coach Jeff McLaren said following a 5-0 Coastal Mountain Conference victory over St. Helena on a warm Tuesday afternoon in Kelseyville. “You got to get to three (on the scoreboard) somehow to win.”
Kelseyville improved to 5-0 in the CMC standings without dropping a single set in any of their five matches – three singles and two doubles.
“It”s always about the team, not just one player,” McLaren added. “We win together, we lose together.”
Kuzu, the Knights” standout No. 1 singles player, turned back a strong effort from Ted Ulin to win 6-3, 6-1. Nils Mostin beat Alexander Pierce 6-0, 6-4 in No. 2 singles and freshmen Claire Vargas continued her strong play for the Knights with a 7-5, 6-3 victory in third singles.
“She came back strong after a tough first set,” McLaren said.
The Knights” doubles teams were no less impressive. Max Lehman and Kyle Schmidt stormed past Callie Flood and Gabe Thum 6-1, 6-2 in first doubles, and Justin Lombardo and Aaron Fultz beat Jenna Ramos and Julie Sciabette 6-1, 6-0 in second doubles.
Kelseyville travels to St. Helena on Monday.
