LAKEPORT — The Clear Lake Cardinals scored in each of the first four innings, building a 9-5 lead, and went on to beat the Fort Bragg Timberwolves 10-8 in a North Central League I varsity baseball slugfest Friday in Lakeport.
Stone Phillips continued his hot-hitting ways, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, and Chad Elliston went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI as the Cardinals improved to 3-1 in league play and 6-5 overall.
Phillips is a combined 8-for-11 in his last three league games with four doubles, a triple and seven RBI.
Winning pitcher Andrew Jackson worked the first 5 1/3 innings. He also went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Oren Ruffcorn finished for the save.
“He pitched real well,” Clear Lake assistant coach Gary Milhaupt said of Ruffcorn”s 1 2/3 innings on the mound.
Clear Lake snapped a 5-5 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third and led the rest of the way. Fort Bragg closed to 9-8 with a run in the top of the sixth.
“It was a good game, it could have gone either way,” Milhaupt said.

Middletown 11, Lower Lake 1
At Lower Lake, Logan Smith went the distance on the mound for his first win of the season and Blaine Amos went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI to power the Middletown Mustangs to a six-inning victory over the Lower Lake Trojans.
Brad Bologna went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Mustangs (4-1, 8-6).
Smith didn”t allow an earned run, struck out six and walked two.
“He progressively gets better and better each outing,” Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said.
Lower Lake is 1-5 in league and 6-7 overall.
Kelseyville 19, Willits 8
At Willits, trailing 8-6 after three innings, the Kelseyville Knights rallied to beat the winless Willits Wolverines in NCL I action.
Kelseyville scored twice in the top of the fourth to pull into an 8-8 tie, then pushed ahead with a five-run fifth. The Knights (4-2, 5-6) broke the game wide open during a six-run sixth inning that featured a grand slam to right-center field off the bat of Jake Peters, who went 3-for-4 on the day with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI overall.
John Mark Reagan went 3-for-5 with two RBI out of the leadoff position, Devon Call went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, and Dustin Thaxton went 3-for-6 with a triple for Kelseyville.
Camilo Diaz pitched all six innings for the Knights. After allowing eight runs through the first three, he settled down and blanked the Wolverines the rest of the way, retiring nine of 10 hitters over the final three innings.
Willits is now 0-7 in league play.
Softball
Kelseyville 6, Willits 5
At Willits, Sabrina Lyon doubled home Alyssa Mick with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning and the Kelseyville Knights beat the Willits Wolverines in NCL I softball action.
Willits (2-3) forced extra innings when Emma Dawson homered to left-center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh, tying the score at 5.
Lyon pitched all eight innings for the victory, striking out seven and walking only one. Stephanie Green went 3-for-4 with a RBI and Kenzie Gould went 3-for-5 for the Knights. Lyon finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Middletown 12, Lower Lake 2
At Lower Lake, the Middletown Mustangs won their first NCL I contest and snapped a six-game losing streak in the process, roughing up the Lower Lake Trojans behind the hitting of Madi Hicks and Cheyanne Horvath and the pitching of freshman southpaw Renee Edwards, who tossed a four-hitter.
Hicks went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Horvath went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI as the Mustangs improved to 1-3 in the league standings and 4-9 overall.
Edwards, Maria Castaldo, Roshell Dunlap and Kristiana Outen added two hits apiece for Middletown.
Adrina Miller went 1-for-2 with a triple and a RBI for Lower Lake (3-3, 10-5).
Upper Lake 17, Rincon Valley Christian 9
At Santa Rosa, Kelsey Pearl went 5-for-5 and Amber McQueen and winning pitcher Kat Edmonds added four hits apiece as Upper Lake beat Rincon Valley Christian in NCL II action.
Edmonds drove in four runs. McQueen also had a triple and two RBI. LaShaye Taylor went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple for the Cougars.
The game was delayed more than a hour in the bottom of the first inning after a Rincon Valley Christian player sustained a broken ankle while sliding into home.
Upper Lake is 1-1 in league and 4-3 overall.
Tennis
Cloverdale 3, Clear Lake 2
At Lakeport, the Clear Lake tennis team fell to Cloverdale in a marathon match that closes out the regular season for the Cardinals.
Four different sets went to tiebreakers and two others were decided 7-5.
Clear Lake”s wins came in second singles – Kenny Henninger beat Oscar Ochoa 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 – and second doubles – Faith Hornby and Serena Kacharos defeated Katie Menzel and Omar Ruiz 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
Sal Mendoza beat Raul Rendon 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in first singles, Hannah Pope defeated Bundita Kosolcharoen 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in third singles, and Jose Torres and Ben Natividad beat Nathan Harper and Tamara Rojas 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6) in first doubles, the final match of the day.
Track
Kelseyville”s track teams went head to head with Upper Lake and St. Vincent on Wednesday on St. Helena”s all-weather track.
Arnulfo Vargas had a big day in the varsity boys” division for the Knights with firsts in the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), long jump (18-3 1/2) and triple jump (39-9). He also ran a leg on the winning 4×100 meter relay team, joining D.J. Boyd, David Robinson and Oscar Lopez.
Boyd added a first in the 100 (11.78 seconds).
In the varsity girls” division, Alex Pruett won the discus (distance not reported). In the junior varsity boys” division, Steven Peters won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 53 seconds and Bradley Dale won the 200 in 25.37.
