UPPER LAKE — Ryan Hodges pitched a two-hitter and Stone Phillips knocked in six runs on Monday as the Clear Lake Cardinals roughed up the Upper Lake Cougars 17-0 in a non-league varsity baseball game at Upper Lake.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Hodges struck out 10 and walked one while improving to 2-0 on the season (both shutout victories).

“He had great control,” Clear Lake coach Gary Milhaupt said. “He lived down in the zone and when they did hit it, they beat it into the ground.”

Phillips went 3-for-4 with two doubles and the half-dozen RBI. He has 11 hits in his last 15 at-bats (.733).

“He”s locked in right now,” Milhaupt said of his starting third baseman.

“I like Stone,” Upper Lake coach Martin Wade added. “I coached a bunch of their kids in Westshore Little League.”

While the Cardinals (7-5) collected 12 hits, they had plenty of extra help from the Cougars (2-5), who issued 13 walks and hit six Clear Lake batters, including Steven Edwards three times (Edwards was beaned once by three different Upper Lake pitchers).

Matt Gatton went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI for Clear Lake and Chad Elliston went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

For Upper Lake, Jared Wade went 1-for-2 and Larry Stacy went 1-for-1.

Both teams return to action today at 4 p.m.

Clear Lake travels to Cloverdale in North Central League I action and Upper Lake visits Sonoma Academy in NCL I action.
