PETALUMA — A strong Casa Grande high school swim team dominated the combined Clear Lake/Kelseyville squad on Thursday during a Sonoma County League meet in Petaluma, winning nearly every event. The meet marks the last time the two teams will compete because Casa Grande, along with Windsor, will be moving to a different league next year because of their school size.
Teams from Calistoga and Piner are expected to take their place next year.
“Casa Grande definitely let us know who was boss today,” coach Agustin Merodio said. “At least the sun was out and we were warm for a change.”
The only win of the day came from the varsity boys” 200-yard freestyle relay team of Andres Tejeda, Aaron Copsey, Evan Thompson and Nathan Powers.
“Our boys” relay teams have been consistently good all season,” Merodio said.
The toughest loss of the day was in the 100-yard breaststroke, during which the undefeated league streak of Matteo Merodio came to an end. Casa Grande”s Henry Steiner touched the wall less than .9 seconds before Merodio.
Other second-place finishes went to Merodio in the 200 individual medley, to Thompson in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, to Powers in the 50 freestyle, and to the 200 medley relay team of Tejeda, Merodio, Thompson and Powers.
Varsity girls
Chelo Lundquist-Krag earned the most points for the Clear Lake/Kelseyville varsity girls with second-place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. The 200 freestyle relay team of Lundquist-Krag, Sarah Merodio, Shao-jia Chang and Liz Fricker also came in second.
Clear lake/Kelseyville closes out its regular-season schedule Thursday at home against Sonoma at the Westshore Pool beginning at 4 p.m.
“We did well against them last year so we”re looking forward to that meet,” Merodio said. “Hopefully we can end the season on a good note.”
Sonoma County League Trials are May 11-12 with North Coast Sectional Champion-ships following on May 17-19.
