SANTA ROSA — Evan Knight and Jessica Maynard made sure the St. Vincent Mustangs wouldn”t lose their lead in the Coastal Mountain Conference South golf standings to Middletown on Monday afternoon at Oakmont East in Santa Rosa.

Knight fired a 1-over-par 65 with four birdies and Maynard carded a 73 as St. Vincent finished with a team score of 291, beating out Middletown (308) by 17 strokes. St. Helena came in third with 317, Kelseyville was next at 334, and Rincon Valley Christian was incomplete (fewer than four golfers).

With two matches remaining in the South race, St. Vincent is 15-1 to Middletown”s 13-3.

“Today was a day they could have gotten them and they didn”t,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said of the Middletown Mustangs, who had beaten St. Vincent last Wednesday at Hidden Valley Lake. “Middletown had a golden opportunity to catch them and make it a race.”

The final two South matches are Thursday at Windsor and a week from today at Oakmont West in Santa Rosa.

“Middletown is going to have to win both to catch them and that won”t be easy to do,” Berry said.

Anthony Tacla led Middletown with a 74, including two birdies, and Aaron Waldrop had 78.

“No one on Middletown could match Knight or for that matter Maynard,” Berry said.

Corey Huber”s round of 71, which included three birdies, led Kelseyville.

Kasey Cazet”s round of 66 led Rincon Valley Christian.
