Where is the patrolman when you need one? Where are the responsible drivers when they should be everywhere?

We saw the aftermath of the near Blue Lakes Highway 20 two-truck accident on Monday. Why had the westbound driver for undetermined reasons allowed his vehicle to drift over the double-yellow lines?

If we had enough patrolmen to see all of the drivers who cross over double- yellow lines, pass on double-yellow lines, drive over the speed limit, drive while intoxicated or impaired by prescribed and other drugs and tailgate, we would add a great number of people to our county population.

We have been conscientious drivers for many years. The only accidents in which we have been involved in have been because of the actions of another driver. A driver not stopping for a stop sign and a woman in a hurry to take her child to school, backed, without looking, into the street with such force that she struck my husband”s car turning it completely around so it faced the direction from which he was coming and causing him bodily injury.

What can responsible drivers do to help our patrolmen and reduce accidents in Lake County? The signs say report drunk drivers. It will take more than that. But how can you report a tailgater when the car is so close that you cannot read the license plate and you really need to keep focused on the road ahead? How do you report the people changing lanes at high speeds dangerously cutting off other drivers?

I don”t believe there has been a time in recent years that we have driven Highways 20, 29 or 53 that we have not encountered one or more of the dangerous traffic violations I have mentioned.

The big question is whether or not we, the general public, can be of assistance to our overworked patrolmen who have to spend too much time investigating and cleaning up after the irresponsible people and not enough time stopping the violators who eventually cause the accidents.
