TOMALES — Kat Edmonds could do no wrong for the Upper Lake Cougars in a 20-3 North Central League II softball victory over the Tomales Braves on a warm Wednesday afternoon in Tomales.
Edmonds pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief of starter Kate Irwin to notch the victory and she went 2-for-2 at the plate, including a grand slam, to power the Cougars to their second league win in three tries this season. Part of her perfect day at the plate included three walks.
“Kat had an awesome day,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said of the senior.
Irwin allowed all three Tomales runs in the bottom of the first before giving way to Edmonds, who struck out five and walked two while finishing out the game. Upper Lake scored in every inning of the abbreviated contest, which was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Trailing 3-1 after one inning, the Cougars pushed ahead to stay with a four-run top of the second. They added four more runs in the third, five in the fourth and six in the fifth.
Amber McQueen went 3-for-4 with four RBI for Upper Lake and freshman LaShaye Taylor went 2-for-2 with a double, triple and three RBI.
Edmonds” bases-loaded home run down the left-field line came in the top of the fourth. It was the fifth home run for the Cougars this season and their third grand slam.
Upper Lake (2-1, 5-3) is home Friday to play Calistoga at 4 p.m.
