LAKEPORT — The Lakeport City Council voted Tuesday to formally oppose Measure D.
The citizen-drafted ordinance, also known as “The Lake County Medical Marijuana Cultivation Act of 2012,” will appear on the June ballot as a result of an initiative effort.
It would add regulations to the Lake County Code regarding medical marijuana growth in the unincorporated areas of the county.
Rob Brown, a representative of Citizens to Protect Lake County – No on Measure D, urged the council to oppose the measure Tuesday night at Lakeport City Hall.
“The concern that we have for the city of Lakeport and the city of Clearlake is the possibility of this measure passing and then Lakeport could easily be next as far as having a ballot initiative,” Brown said.
“I expect that if it were to fail, like we expect it to, like we hope that it will, that there won”t be an effort to try to get it passed in the city of Lakeport,” he added.
Brown, a Lake County Supervisor, indicated he was speaking as a citizen.
Don Merrill, a representative of the groups behind the initiative, spoke to the council in favor of measure.
“Nothing in Measure D allows anything that isn”t already allowed. Measure D clearly defines when and where is too much being grown,” Merrill argued.
At the end of the public discussion, the council voted 4-1 to oppose Measure D, with Councilwoman Suzanne Lyons dissenting.
The Lake County Board of Supervisors is set to consider a request to formally oppose the measure during its meeting next week.
