FORT BRAGG — Two pitcher”s duels in two days and two wins for the Fort Bragg Timberwolves following a 2-1 victory over the Clear Lake Cardinals on Wednesday in Fort Bragg.
One day after beating Kelseyville 1-0 behind Bradley Norman”s two-hitter, the Timberwolves rode the arm of Matt Hernandez to another nail-biting victory. Hernandez allowed just three hits as did losing pitcher Ryan Hodges.
“We played great defense and Hodges pitched well enough to win, but we”re not going to beat many people getting three hits,” Clear Lake assistant coach Gary Milhaupt said.
Fort Bragg (7-3) snapped a 1-all tie in the bottom of the sixth on Garrett Thornton”s sacrifice fly to left field. Clear Lake (5-2, 9-6) put the potential tying run at third base with one out in the top of the seventh, but Hernandez wiggled out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
The Timberwolves picked up their first run in the bottom of the first on a Tony Hernandez RBI single. Clear Lake tied the game with a run in the fourth on Steven Edwards” sacrifice fly.
Matt Hernandez struck out 12 and walked one while Hodges struck out three and walked three.
Chad Elliston, Stone Phillips and Andrew Jackson had Clear Lake”s only hits.
Clear Lake travels to St. Helena (7-1) Friday.
