I am writing in response to the letter from the Lake Berryessa Chamber of Commerce opposing National Conservation Area designation for the Berryessa Snow Mountain region. As a resident at Lake Berryessa, I concur with the disappointment and frustration at the slow pace at which the resorts at Lake Berryessa are being brought back online.

So, as a statement of frustration over the lack of progress in rebuilding the Lake Berryessa resorts, Peter Kilkus”s letter from the Lake Berryessa Chamber of Commerce is understandable. As a statement of fact, however, it is sadly lacking.

Peer reviewed research by Headwaters Economics, an independent non-partisan institute, has clearly and conclusively shown the economic potential for public lands that have special federal designation (National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, etc.) to help gateway communities. While it will not solve all of a city or regions economic problems it can be an important component. The issue here is how one responds to take advantage of those opportunities – or not.

Generally, Chambers of Commerce are in the business of promoting economic growth, but not here. That is unfortunate. Their information is outdated and inaccurate.

In their original letter Kilkus quoted Don Amador of the BlueRibbon Coalition indicating that they were opposed, yet the Off Road Vehicle community supports the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Conservation Area. They understand that we will all have a seat at the table to discuss issues, resolve problems and have a real say in how the federal agencies manage their lands. It is time to work together.

Much of their other comments are similarly inaccurate or mired in the past. Again, we understand the frustration over the concession issue at Lake Berryessa. So let”s push forward together to solve problems, better manage the land and help our local economies.
