LAKE COUNTY — A Cobb man, who was arrested Friday and charged with murder in connection with a woman”s death, was found unresponsive in his county jail cell Sunday evening and pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.
James Michael Carpy, 44, was booked into the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility on felony charges of murder and inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant.
The counts stemmed from the death of Bethany Angel Vogel, 33, of Cobb.
Lake County Sheriff”s Office (LCSO) deputies responded to the woman”s Hogan Hill Lane home on Friday evening and found her dead at the scene, according to a statement released by Capt. Chris Macedo.
Macedo stated the woman”s father found her dead in a back bedroom of the residence.
Responding officers were unable to determine the cause of her death, the captain added. Although according to the original police scanner reports heard from the Record-Bee newsroom, witnesses called the police immediately following a shooting incident on Hogan Hill Lane alleging they thought a woman might be dead. Shots were reported being heard shortly before law enforcement arrived.
The scanner calls indicated law enforcement was searching for Carpy and were unaware if he was armed.
Macedo wrote in the press release that after arriving, deputies contacted “the boyfriend” — later identified as Carpy ? inside the home and detained him without incident and took him to the department for questioning, according to Macedo.
Carpy was ultimately placed under arrest and booked into the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility on $1 million bail.
A correctional officer conducting a routine cell check found Carpy lying on the floor of his cell at about 7:10 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement by LCSO Sgt. Steve Brooks.
Medical personnel responded and determined Carpy was not breathing and had no vital signs, Brooks stated.
Medical and correctional staff conducted CPR, as did rescue personnel after responding, according to Brooks.
Carpy was taken to Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport and declared dead shortly after arriving, Brooks stated.
Investigators could not determine an apparent cause of death, but suicide or foul play do not appear to have been a factor, Brooks stated.
Carpy”s death remains under investigation with an autopsy set for Tuesday.
