CLEARLAKE OAKS — A man suffered major injuries early Sunday morning when the SUV he was driving traveled off the roadway and hit a tree.

James Weiss, 40, of Clearlake Oaks was driving a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV on Sulphur Bank Road south of Highway 20, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

At approximately 3:30 a.m., Weiss failed to negotiate a right-hand curve in the roadway, traveled down an embankment and crashed the SUV into a tree. Speed was a factor in the crash, according to the CHP.

The SUV came to rest on the driver”s side, trapping Weiss. According to the CHP, a person walking on the road at approximately 8:15 a.m. heard Weiss moaning.

Northshore Fire Protection District personnel responded and freed Weiss from the vehicle. Weiss was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital via REACH air ambulance.
