PETALUMA — Brad Bologna made his first start of the season Monday for the Middletown Mustangs in a non-league varsity baseball game at Petaluma. St. Vincent”s Alex Neve won”t soon forget it.
Neve, the winning pitcher, caught up to a 3-1 Bologna fastball with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning and sent it deep to left field for a grand slam in St. Vincent”s 10-0 five-inning victory.
“He crushed it,” Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said. “It landed in the softball seats.”
St. Vincent had already scored twice in the inning to go up 3-0 when Neve connected with one out.
“That was the killer blow,” Tucker said.
St. Vincent ended up scoring seven times in the inning for an 8-0 lead.
Neve worked the first three innings to pick up the victory. He struck out one and didn”t walk a batter.
Middletown had only two hits after being one-hit in a 10-0 loss to Kelseyville on Friday. Bologna and Blaine Amos each hit doubles for the Mustangs (8-11), who have dropped five in a row.
“We”re just trying to get back on track,” Tucker said with an eye toward Middletown”s league road game today in Cloverdale at 4 p.m.
Middletown hosts Clear Lake on Thursday.
