I am writing regarding the shooting and killing of the geese that we enjoyed down at the lakefront at Library Park. Sadly, our chief of police, city manager and Fish and Game all decided it was best to shoot 70 to 80 geese to thin the flock and they did not reach out to the public for opinion or support.

Their health concerns to the public and feces in the Library Park, although valid, did not give them the right to exclude public input.

Within less than an hour of calling friends and neighbors, we were able to round up eight volunteers who would have captured these geese to re-house them on private lands. We were also able to find numerous homes for the now dead geese. So the public does care. My 95-year-old grandmother looked forward to her outing to view the geese and enjoy their beauty. I haven”t had the heart to tell her that they were shot in the middle of the night.

The killing of the geese is tragic. The secrecy and disregard to the public”s opinion is equally tragic and careless. Would it have been too much to request volunteer help, foster homes or donations and private lands to re-house them?

You should all be ashamed. I know I am.
