So Stephanie LaMonaca”s thoughtful and beautifully written appeal for reason and civility in our public discourse was both “distracting and disparaging”, according to Tony Velasquez. I”ll go ahead and say it: some things deserve to be disparaged, like making important decisions about policy and leadership based on clever bumper stickers, or who we”d rather have a beer with. You”d think that would be obvious, at this point. Investing the time and energy to be informed is a responsibility of citizenship; so is the willingness to engage in good faith dialogue with others, based on a sincere effort to understand what”s going on. I”m sorry if saying that makes some people feel defensive.
