KELSEYVILLE — The Kelseyville Unified School District will have only one librarian next school year.
The district currently has two library clerks, but the district Board of Trustees voted on April 17 to lay off one librarian because of budget cuts.
“We were going to eliminate both (library clerks) because of budget deficits but decided to keep one,” Superintendent Dave McQueen.
The trustees approved a resolution that laid off one library clerk, two campus monitors, a custodian, a director of services and a skilled maintenance worker, effective June 30. The district also accepted five retirement notices at the meeting.
McQueen said the district is in the process of creating a schedule for the remaining library clerk to visit each district school site at least once per week.
McQueen said the district is still operating under its Fiscal Recovery Plan, which was passed by the Board of Trustees in March 2011.
The plan mitigated a $2.3 million budget shortfall for the district. The district was able to restore many positions and programs that were eliminated in the plan before the current school year began, but it still faces potential funding cuts at the state level.
McQueen said two statewide tax measures that are likely to qualify for the November ballot are crucial to educational funding.
“If one doesn”t pass, we”ll have massive trigger cuts in January to education across the state,” McQueen said. “It”s very important they pass.”
McQueen said the district would possibly bring back the library clerk if one or both tax measures are passed by voters.
