CALISTOGA — The Calistoga Wildcats pulled off one of the more incredible comebacks of the 2011-12 sports season on Tuesday as they not only avoided being 10-runned by the Upper Lake Cougars, but rallied to win 20-18 in a North Central League II softball barnburner at Calistoga.
Upper Lake (3-5, 6-7) carried a 17-6 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, forcing Calistoga to come up with at least two runs to keep the game going. The Wildcats scored twice to make it 17-8, then turned the game on its head by pushing 12 runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth for a 20-17 lead.
Upper Lake scored its final run in the top of the seventh.
“We had a lot of errors and a lot of people not moving for the ball,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said of the disastrous bottom of the sixth. “You name it, we did it.”
Upper Lake scored nine times in the top of the second to open up a 10-0 lead. Calistoga answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning but the Cougars tallied four more runs in the third for a 14-5 advantage.
Amber McQueen went 4-for-5 with a double and a RBI for the Cougars, who had 10 hits to go along with 10 errors. Kat Edmonds went 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBI and both Janee Swaney and Kate Irwin went 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
It was the season finale for the Cougars.
