CLEARLAKE — A family narrowly escaped after its mobile home caught fire late Thursday night, according to one fire official.

“They were very lucky,” Charlie Diener, battalion chief for Lake County Fire Protection District (LCFPD), said.

The incident occurred just after 11:15 p.m. in a single-wide mobile home near 19th and Boyles avenues in Clearlake, Diener said.

The fire started in the walls of a back bedroom, and the smell of smoke awoke the family, Diener said. The three adults and one baby escaped without injury, he added.

Flames spread to brush behind the home and burned about two acres, the battalion chief said.

Fire crews contained the fire within 30 to 40 minutes while contending with “significant winds,” Diener said.

He described the home as “a total loss.”

The American Red Cross helped the displaced family members, putting them up for the night and arranging for food, Diener said.

LCFPD, CAL FIRE and Northshore Fire Protection District responded to the fire. The last crew members left the scene by 2:30 a.m. Friday, Diener said.

The cause remains under investigation but the flames appeared accidental, he added.
