UPPER LAKE — One man hopes to raise money with trees and blueberries.

John Hathaway, owner of The Woodpecker in Nice, is selling blueberry bushes and raffling off trees to raise money for Lights of Love at today”s Wild West Day in Upper Lake.

Lights of Love is a community effort to install solar-powered lights at the Upper Lake High School football stadium to save the school money. Hathaway said the group needs to raise $150,000 for the solar-powered lights and is one-third of the way to that goal. He said he wanted to help the cause.

“I”m trying to help out the community,” Hathaway said. “It”s a neat project.”

Hathaway purchased 15 blueberry plants and 15 small trees from Poppy”s Nursery in Lakeport. He said for every blueberry plant purchased at $30, $10 will go to Lights of Love.

The 15 small trees, as well as two larger blueberry plants, will be raffled off. He said raffle tickets cost $1, with all raffle ticket money going to Lights of Love.

“It”s a fundraiser for a good cause,” Hathaway said.

Wild West Day takes place today on Main Street in downtown Upper Lake.
