LAKEPORT — A judge Monday postponed the jury trial of a Lakeport man accused of killing another man nearly five years ago using information he received from California”s online Megan”s Law sex offender registry.

Ivan Garcia Oliver, 34, faces three felonies, including murder, in connection with the November 2007 stabbing death of 67-year-old Michael A. Dodele, who was reportedly listed as a sex offender at the time.

Oliver pleaded not guilty to the counts and denied several special allegations in the case.

Oliver”s trial was set for next week, but defense counsel Stephen Carter asked a Lake County judge for a continuance Monday because his involvement in an ongoing murder trial impacted his ability to prepare for the Oliver matter.

Judge David W. Herrick found good cause to reschedule the trial for July 11.

Oliver, who remains in custody at the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility, will appear in court in two weeks for pretrial proceedings.
