LAKE COUNTY — Friends, family and the law enforcement community are mourning the loss of a former member of law enforcement organizations in Lake County.

William V. “Bill” Mooney died on Wednesday.

“We lost an outstanding retired member of our agency. We are sad to have lost such a great person,” Lakeport Police Chief Brad Rasmussen said on Thursday. “Bill was one of the finest property and evidence officers in California and truly the best we ever worked with in our agency.”

Rasmussen said Mooney”s reputation with the California Association for Property and Evidence (CAPE) was unparalleled and he had the highest degree of respect from other property and evidence officers throughout the state.

Rasmussen said Mooney began at Lakeport Police Department as a volunteer in 1995. He was credited with revamping the property and evidence facility.

He also actively sought out training opportunities, coursework and belonged to many professional organizations.

He was employed as the evidence custodian and technician for the Lake County Narcotics Task Force, as well.

In 2011 Mooney was named Officer of the Year and honored at the Lake County Board of Supervisors chambers.

Mooney is survived by his wife, Eva, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private service is planned for Mooney.
