LAKEPORT — City police announced plans for the annual Independence Day celebration in Lakeport and provided safety reminders in advance of the holiday next week.

Several city roads will be closed to vehicle traffic during the July 4 event: Park Street from the south side of Third Street to the north side of First Street, and Second Street from the east side of North Main Street to Park Street.

Lakeport City Hall will be manned as an operational command center for the celebration.

The Lakeport Police Department (LPD) asked drivers to drive diligently and carefully at all times during the event. Motorists should expect heavy foot traffic.

Citizens can discharge “safe and sane” fireworks within the city only on July 1 through 3 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and July 4 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

People can use “safe and sane” fireworks only in a small area of the public parking lot adjacent to Coach Craft Auto Body — orange cones and markers will clearly delineate the appropriate location — and any street within the city that would not otherwise violate any city ordinance.

The LPD stated it was not uncommon in the past to see “safe and sane” fireworks in shopping center parking lots. Those areas are private property, so law enforcement doesn”t have the authority grant permission for such activities there, the LPD added.

Using any other types of fireworks at any time or discharging “safe and sane” fireworks outside of the early July dates and times is prohibited.
