UKIAH — Under the new management of David Furia, the Ukiah Speedway held its grand reopening Saturday night. Fans were treated to a full racing card and a fireworks show sponsored by Taco Bell of Ukiah, Hydro Pacific Garden Supply and Coyote Valley Casino.
Modifieds
Richie Potts set the fast time and a new track record during modified qualifying. In the main event, Kyle Tellstrom took advantage of a mid-race restart to move into the lead, which he held all the way to the finish line.
Jammers
Jessy Thurman worked his way up through the field to take the checkered flag in the Jammers main event, edging out Michael Peterson.
Bandoleros
Frankie Pickrell set a new track record of 15.490 seconds and went on to win the trophy dash. In the main event, brake problems forced out Colby Furia early in the feature race. Pickrell drove to the win to cap a big night.
Legends Cars
Fast qualifier Tony Mangini (14.265) also won the 14-car-strong main event, beating Dan Monier and Ian Elliot to the finish line.
Bombers
A jammed-pack field of 22 bombers took the green flag in the bomber main event, which left little wiggle room on the track. From the outset, the race was plagued with mishaps. After many attempts at double-file restarts track officials instead went to a single-file restart that seemed to work, but contact on the track continued. Coming out of turn four, the race leader and another car crashed into the wall. Since the track curfew had been reached, racing ended.
Racing action continues Saturday at Lakeport Speedway for the Legends of the Pacific, Extreme Asphalt Outlaws, Bandoleros, Taco Bell Bombers and Jammers. Racing shifts back to Ukiah on Sunday for bombers, Legend Cars and Bandoleros.
