UKIAH — On Aug. 20, the Mendocino College Foundation will hand out $15,000 in book awards thanks to generous donations from Lake and Mendocino county communities.
Beside the costs associated with tuition, the single largest expense for students is purchasing or renting textbooks, according to foundation executive director Katie Fairbairn, executive director. The foundation directs the Yvonne Sligh Book Awards Program, providing book awards at the beginning of each fall and spring semesters.
The awards are available to students not receiving any type of financial aid or scholarships. “These are students who are not eligible for any financial assistance and really need our help to be successful in college,” foundation president Gary Smith said.
The foundation will distribute 100 vouchers for $150 each to students this fall for use in the college”s bookstores toward the purchase or rental of required textbooks. According to Fairbairn, “This program was established 10 years ago by the Mendocino College Foundation to honor the late librarian Yvonne Sligh, who was employed at the College for 16 years.”
