CLEARLAKE — The American Red Cross is providing food and shelter for residents who were evacuated because of two wildfires burning near Highway 20 in eastern Lake County.

Ellen Maremont Silver, regional communications director for the American Red Cross of Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake Counties, said about 100 people were evacuated from the Spring Valley area because of the Walker and Wye fires.

A Red Cross shelter was set up at the Highlands Senior Center, located at 3245 Bowers Ave. in Clearlake.

“We”re feeding 25 people for lunch,” Maremont Silver said.

She said three people spent the night at the shelter.

Maremont Silver said an unknown number of evacuees are gathered at the Clearlake Oaks Moose Lodge, located near the “Y” junction of highways 20 and 53 near where the Wye Fire burns.

“There isn”t a Red Cross shelter there, but many people are there, so we”re feeding them,” she said.

Maremont Silver said more people are expected to show up to the shelter at the senior center.

“Shelters offer a sense of safety in addition to physical needs such as food and drink,” she said.

Updates on the two fires will continue to be posted to www.facebook.com/recordbee as information becomes available.
