MCKINLEYVILLE — Emily Hayes scored two goals in a 3-0 win over St. Bernard of Eureka and Kelcie Reynolds and Madison Wynacht each had goals in a 2-2 tie with McKinleyville on Saturday as the Clear Lake High School varsity girls” soccer team opened the 2012 season with two non-league games at McKinleyville.

The Cardinals (1-0-1) didn”t get much of a break, playing St. Bernard at noon and coming right back for a 3 p.m. game against McKinleyville, a contest in which Clear Lake held a 2-1 lead until a penalty kick tied it with two minutes remaining.

“I thought we did a good job,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said. “We got a little tired in the second half of the McKinleyville game.”

Against St. Bernard in the early game, Hannah Norwood had the other Clear Lake goal. She also had one of three assists, with sister Emily Norwood and Nadine Bradley getting the others.

Clear Lake led 1-0 after the first half.

Against McKinleyville in the late game, Reynolds scored an unassisted goal in the first half to make it 1-0 and Wynacht scored in the second half to make it 2-0. Bradley assisted on that goal.

Clear Lake hosts Windsor today at 6 p.m. The junior varsity squad plays at 4:30 p.m. On Friday, the varsity Cardinals travel to Fort Bragg to participate in the annual Abalone Cup. They”ll play one game on Friday and another on Saturday.
