LAKEPORT — The Windsor Jaguars pulled away in the second half to beat the Clear Lake Cardinals 6-1 in a non-league varsity girls” soccer game on Tuesday evening in Lakeport.

Clear Lake (1-1-1) held its own for a half before the Jaguars, a Division I school, flexed their considerable muscle in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 4-0.

“They really did outplay us,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said. “They”re a Division I school with 1,700 kids (more than three times Clear Lake”s size). They have 20 girls on the varsity.”

Windsor built a 2-0 lead in the first half before Clear Lake got on the scoreboard 30 minutes into the game on Nadine Bradley”s penalty kick. The Cardinals nearly tied the game in the closing stages of the half, but a shot by Kristy Hayes ricocheted off the post.

“We had an opportunity to tie it up right toward the end and just missed,” Larrea said.

The Jaguars kept Clear Lake keeper Heather Werner plenty busy and she was up to the task more often than not.

“There were a lot of shots and she did a great job,” Larrea said.

Although dominated by the Windsor team, Clear Lake”s coach said he wasn”t disappointed with his team”s effort — just the opposite.

“We played hard and are still trying to figure out some things,” Larrea said.

Windsor beat Clear Lake 8-1 in the junior varsity game.

The varsity Cardinals play two games this weekend in the Abalone Cup at Fort Bragg. They open play Friday against an opponent to be determined.
