I thought Terry Knight”s column on Aug. 22 should hit home with all members of our community and maybe some of those who it pertains to directly.

The use of high-tech equipment on a naturally-created, shallow body of water does not blend well when you add speed by water vehicles.

The result does nothing but stir up the algae and bottom of the lake that has had the same physical structure for the last several thousand years. When we started using the lake for recreation and building a vacation atmosphere here, the lake was a clear lake.

The mindset has to change if we”re to help the lake at all. Quit trying to accommodate certain people, wasting time and money and put more effort into helping the lake. It”s time for new stipulations and rules for the betterment of the entire body of water and all the people who want this area as it used to be. The lake is used for domestic and agricultural purposes as well as recreation.

It is being drawn down some 5 to 6 feet during the summer. The depth downstream from Luebow Point to the dam is listed as 12 feet at the most when the lake is full, which hasn”t been for some time. Now subtract your draw down. The lake is in need of better consideration.

When the lake gets happy, the people will be happy and the entire area might get back to where it used to be. The Oaks area has a similar situation and no place for the algae to go. Restricting some areas and speed zones would help. You might even see more aluminum boats with a 10-horse out there, people enjoying a quiet day of fishing or just swimming with the kids.
