UPPER LAKE — Luis Ruiz needed only one half to get his hat trick as the Lower Lake Trojans beat the Upper Lake Cougars 5-1 in a non-league varsity boys” soccer game Thursday afternoon in Upper Lake.

The season opener for both teams provided first-year Lower Lake coach Dan Griffin with his first win. He watched Ruiz score three times in the first half as the Trojans built a 4-0 lead.

Both teams added a goal in the second half, including a long shot by Upper Lake”s John Moreno that broke up the shutout.

Diego Villalobos and Luis Pelcastre also scored for Lower Lake. Javier Villalobos assisted on one of Ruiz”s goals.
