HOPLAND — An Oklahoma motorcycle rider suffered moderate injuries following a collision Monday on Highway 101 south of Hopland.
David Addington, 45, of San Francisco was driving a motor home southbound on Highway 101 across the Green Bridge Monday about 11:20 a.m. when it lost its cargo compartment door, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Wesley Garside, 27, of Escalon was traveling behind the motor home in a Ford F350 pickup truck. The truck crashed into the door, which caused the truck”s fuel tank to begin leaking unbeknownst to Garside, according to the CHP.
Both drivers pulled over to the right shoulder south of the bridge. Garside let Addington into the truck and they turned around and headed north on Highway 101 to retrieve the door, according to the CHP.
Robert Hernandez, 45, of Glen Ellen was driving a Ford Van northbound immediately behind the truck. Ricky James, 58, of Tulsa, Okla. was riding his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle behind the van.
Hernandez reportedly saw the diesel fuel leaking from the truck and slowed down to approximately 20 mph, according to the CHP.
For unknown reasons, James failed to slow down and hit the rear of the van.
According to the CHP, James did not remember what happened and did not provide a statement. James was taken to Ukiah Valley Medical Center to be treated for moderate injuries.
It was unknown if the diesel spill played a role in the collision.
