SANTA ROSA — The Sonoma Academy Coyotes scored in the first minute of each half en route to a 4-0 victory over the Clear Lake Cardinals in non-league varsity girls” soccer action Tuesday in Santa Rosa.

“We actually played them pretty well,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said of the Coyotes (1-0), who were making their season debut.

Sonoma Academy took a 2-0 lead midway through the first half, taking advantage of a bad hop in front of the Clear Lake net, and the Coyotes” final goal came on a direct kick late in the second half.

Standouts on defense for the Cardinals were Kelcie Reynolds, Emily Norwood and Nadine Bradley.

Clear Lake had only a handful of scoring chances, according to Larrea. “We had a few opportunities, we just didn”t convert. We”re a young team and we make young team mistakes.”

Clear Lake (4-3-1) has already completed one-third of its regular-season schedule before the first of September.

Next up for the Cardinals is a non-league game at home Sept. 5 against Roseland Prep.
