Community honors soldier

HIT: Crowds gathered Tuesday to honor fallen soldier Sgt. Richard Essex of Kelseyville during a military procession.

HIT: Essex”s family anticipates many people will attend his 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday at Kelseyville High School.

MISS: A woman reportedly displayed an obscene gesture to the family as the procession passed through downtown Lakeport.

Budget adopted

HIT: The Lake County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted the 2012-13 recommended county budget.

HIT: Interim County Administrator Matt Perry set goals for the budget that included providing high service levels for residents and avoiding employee layoffs.

MISS: Appropriations within the budget were about $3 million lower than first projected in June and were $6 million lower than the previous year”s budget.

Summer”s biggest blast

Mount Konocti bus trips

HIT: On six Saturdays later this year, people will have the chance to access Mount Konocti by way of docent-led bus tours as part of a pilot project.

HIT: The program is a partnership of the county government and the Lake Transit Authority.

Lakeport man gets 32 to life

HIT: Ivan Garcia Oliver was sentenced to 32 years to life in prison. He was convicted of two felonies and special allegations for the stabbing death of his neighbor.

MISS: Oliver was the first person ever convicted in California of using information from the Megan”s Law website to commit felonies against someone listed on the online registry.

HIT: Prosecutor Richard Hinchcliff praised the work of investigators Corey Paulich and Brian Martin. The trial took place almost five years after the investigation.

CLAC may have missed the boat

HIT: The Clear Lake Advisory Committee presented its quarterly report to the Board of Supervisors (BOS) suggesting nine ways the county could better manage the lake.

MISS: Several supervisors questioned why the CLAC report didn”t reference potential costs or funding options. BOS Chair Rob Brown called the recommendations “obvious.”

Attracting outdoor enthusiasts

HIT: That was the theme for the fourth installment of the Summertime Tourism Networking Series, an event presented by the county and the Lake County Chamber of Commerce at Hidden Valley Lake.

HIT: About 60 people attended, a nearly even mix of north and south county representatives, according to organizers.
